Joe Edwards says he would be happy if there was interest in Millwall’s players in transfer window – because it would mean they were delivering big performances on the pitch.
The Lions head coach was asked in his press conference previewing Saturday’s trip to Stoke City if he was worried that teams could bid for Zian Flemming next month.
The Amsterdam-born attacker scored 15 goals in his maiden season with Millwall – and first in English football.
But Flemming, the subject of multiple bids by Burnley that were rejected in the summer, has struggled to impact matches in the same fashion this time around.
The 25-year-old has four goals and has not netted since October 28, a barren run of eight games.
Edwards – asked if he feared bigger clubs moving for Flemming – said: “It’s not a fear that I have at the moment.
“I’ve been working with Zian for seven games together now and, if I’m honest, my immediate priority with him is to get him to his best form because the standout story with Zi last season was that he scored 15 goals. We’re a team at the moment that is struggling to get results because we’re struggling to put games to bed – to do that we need to score some goals.
“I want to see him back playing with a bit more freedom and scoring goals before I even start considering whether our phone is going to start ringing in January.
“If that happens then it is something we consider, as and when. At the moment we’re a team that isn’t performing to our best level – Zian is a big part of this team. We all need to up our levels and step up.
“Big dogs coming calling for our players is a nice problem that I’d like to have because it would indicate that things are going really well on the pitch. At the moment that is all we’re aiming for – for performance levels on the pitch to improve.”
