MK Dons come from behind to win at leaders Mansfield

  • It was honours even at the break after an exciting first half with chances at both ends.

MK Dons overcame a deficit to record a 2-1 victory away at Sky Bet League Two leaders Mansfield, bolstering their promotion push.

After a thrilling first half featuring opportunities for both teams, it was all squares at the interval.

Fifteen minutes after MJ Williams had handled a cross from Stephen Quinn in the box, Mansfield took the lead.

Michael Kelly, the custodian, made a great save against Lucas Akins’ penalty kick and even better one to deny the former Burton forward’s follow-up, but he was powerless as Stephen Quinn finished off the loose ball.

After five minutes, Lewis Brunt’s strong header struck Alex Gilbey, who was advancing, and he finished with a powerful 20-yard strike to tie the score for the Dons.

After 38 minutes, Matthew Dennis cleared Aden Flint’s header off the line, and moments later, Dennis headed wide from six yards out at the opposite end following a deflected cross.

After 54 minutes, though, Dennis gave Dons the lead when he cut in from the left and his low 20-yard effort swerved past a defenceless Christy Pym.

With a fantastic save from Gilbey’s finish in the dying seconds, Pym kept Dons from scoring a third.
