Super sub now gunning for Dons starting spot#

The former Gateshead player is starting to establish himself with MK Dons.

Mike Williamson is hoping that Stephen Wearne can become a star player for MK Dons after he has contributed two assists in his two cameo appearances off the bench thus far.

The 23-year-old was acquired from Gateshead in January, but his first-team opportunities have been limited due to an injury. However, in his bench appearances against Gillingham and Accrington Stanley, he has set up goals for teammates; his performance against Stanley on Saturday significantly altered the outcome for the home team.

Still working his way back to full match fitness, Wearne is a player Williamson believes can make a big difference in the way Dons line-up in the coming weeks.

“If he needs to come on, he will impact it, but we’re looking to get him in the starting line-up as quickly as we can,” stated the head coach. “However, there is competition for spots. The boys who are participating are doing well, and he is making the competition more intense. It’s beneficial.

“In his two appearances, he has contributed two assists and made an impact. We’ve brought him here because we know what he’s about.

“He’s been having trouble with little niggles, but you’re beginning to see his potential. He’s growing stronger, so we need to use caution with him so as not to throw him in before he’s ready.

“Basically, we have to play with a front five. Being a good player, which good players can do, he can play any of those positions. He is intelligent and knowledgeable both tactically and technically.”
Kyran Lofthouse, who played with Wearne at Gateshead, is familiar with his skills and thinks he will be a key player for the Dons once he settles in.
“We played well together at Gateshead,” he remarked. You’ve witnessed glimmers of his potential.”He contributes goals and assists and is creative when he gets the ball. Without a doubt, he will be excellent for us. He’s had a few minor injury setbacks, but I believe he’ll soar once he finds his rhythm. He is an elite athlete and a decent individual as well.
