For the balance of the season, Nelson Khumbeni has been loaned to the Shrimps from Bolton Wanderers.
Holding midfielder Khumbeni joins the Mazuma Mobile Stadium after making an impression while on loan at AFC Fylde, a National League team, from October to the beginning of January.
He performed admirably at Fylde, and Bolton brought him back to enable him to advance.
He’s trained with us today, and I’ve watched him play a few times, including the other day.
He’s physically strong and adept with the ball; he reminds me of Yann Songo’o, but he’s definitely younger.
“He’s here to support Yann because he’s been playing every game and, due to his advanced age, we need to manage him.”
Khumbeni began his career at Norwich City, rose through the ranks, and in 2021 he earned a professional contract.
Before moving to Bolton in 2022, he made 68 appearances in a range of competitions, including the FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2, and the U18s Premier League.
In August of that year, he made his debut as a late substitution during their Carabao Cup triumph over Salford City.
In September of last year, Bolton defeated Manchester United’s U21 team 8-1 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, scoring the team’s first goal as an adult.
The next week, Khumbeni and Max Conway, his teammate at Bolton, moved on loan to AFC Fylde, where he made ten appearances across all competitions.
He expressed his delight on the Morecambe website upon arriving at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium. I immediately thought, “Jump at it!” when I learned about the transfer.
“When I arrived, I had a conversation with (Brannan) regarding his expectations for me as a player and how my skills and abilities may help the squad.
“I consider myself to be more of a defensive midfielder, but I would do anything the manager asked of me to help the team in any capacity.”
