Late heartbreak for Tranmere*

On Tuesday night at Prenton Park, Morecambe overcame a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 against Tranmere in an exciting match.

Harvey Saunders’ assist to Rob Apter was the first goal of the game. After Saunders was fouled, Connor Jennings scored his tenth goal of the year from the penalty spot.

Four minutes later, Charlie Brown sent a perfect effort into the top corner, prompting Morecambe to rally. Ten minutes from time, substitute Jordan Slew tied the score at 2-2.

In stoppage time, Jacob Davenport’s 25-yard free kick took a stunning turn and found the top corner to give the Shrimps maximum points.
Saunders dispossessed Morecambe captain Jacob Bedeau, setting up Apter for his sixth goal of the year, and Rovers seized the lead within four minutes.

Tranmere’s joy quickly doubled as did their advantage. Saunders was fouled after Connor Wood’s perfectly put through ball, giving the home team a penalty. With assurance, Jennings advanced and hammered the ball past Archie Mair down the middle.

Still, Morecambe managed to stay in the game and cut the lead in the fourteenth minute. After Julian Larsson’s attempt was deflected, Brown scored three goals in the first minutes of the game with a strong shot into the far corner.

Just before the half, Apter showed off his skill as a right winger by crossing the ball towards the back post, which turned into a scoring opportunity but went just wide of Mair’s goal.

Five minutes into the second half, Bedeau headed a corner just over as the visiting squad continued to press for an equaliser.

Rovers stepped up their efforts to establish a bigger advantage. After Apter’s shot was blocked, Saunders fired over a few moments later.

Tranmere attempted to start a counterattack, but Nelson Khumbeni was booked for tripping Hendry. The hosts were given the chance to mount another attack, which was started by Hendry in his own half and finished by the Scotsman side-footing the ball into Mair’s arms.

Morecambe lost possession in midfield, which gave O’Connor the opportunity to gather and link with Apter through a superb through ball. Apter made a quick dash into the box, but his poor one-on-one effort was unable to overcome Mair.

The Shrimps started to play a little shakily towards the end, which allowed Tranmere to take advantage of misdirected passes and generate more scoring possibilities. After Apter’s attempt from the edge of the box forced Mair into a low save, Hendry’s effort was blocked.
Joel Senior attempted a free kick that just needed a little touch to tie the score, but for some reason, nobody in the penalty area was able to stop him. Next, Slew put McGee to the test with a close-range shot, and McGee made a great stop.

However, the Morecambe replacement levelled things in the 82nd minute when he crashed the ball into the net after Senior’s right-wing cross.

Nearing stoppage time, Jennings attempted a long-range shot that just missed the far post. Senior’s low drive collided with McGee’s gloves on the other side as both teams attempted to score a game-winning goal.
