Morecambe’s players had to battle hard to impress fans away’

Morecambe manager Ged Brannan praised his side’s spirit as they once again overturned a deficit to secure a well deserved point away from home.

In the nine games the Shrimps have played away from home in all competitions since Saturday’s 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon, they have only lost twice.

Omar Bugiel’s goal in the 50th minute put Brannan’s team behind, but Chris Stokes’ first goal for the team with 16 minutes remaining in normal time tied the score.

Morecambe hadn’t had the ideal preparation with midfielder Joe Adams being forced out of the starting line-up at the last minute.

Speaking following the match on Saturday, Brannan disclosed that a number of his players and backroom personnel had been sick before the Plough Lane encounter.

“I’m not making excuses, but we had illness throughout the camp today and we also sustained a few injuries,” he stated.

It was a terrific point in the end and it demonstrated the character of the boys because there were five or six boys who were well off it as a result of this illness.
“I was really happy with the way the boys worked together, even though it wasn’t our best performance. We could have pulled it off right at the end.

“I’m not a whiner, but it was a difficult day for us. As I’ve stated from the beginning, any point this league gets away from home is good, and today was no exception.

“The outcome keeps us competitive and up there, and I’m really proud of the boys’ effort.”
