Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell reckons Celtic’s recent struggles could be down to their wide men.
It is clearly the inabilty of the head coach to make adjustments to the team he had last year and work on the areas he knew had lapses.
Under Ange Postecoglou, Celtic won the domestic Treble in 2023. Kyogo Furuhashi’s goals and the superb support of wingers Jota and Daizen Maeda were major contributors to their victory.
Jota and Postecoglou both left the team over the summer, and Brendan Rodgers, the team’s previous manager, has failed to keep the Hoops’ style of free-flowing football alive—a fact that opposing boss Kettlewell has even noted.
“I can only say this from a manager’s point of view, preparing to play against them,” he said to PLZ Soccer. The one significant thing that has changed for me this year is the threat in the wide spaces, as that’s when I believed that Celtic had previously seriously injured you.
We talk about Kyogo’s objectives, but it was all about penetrating those broad locations. When they made a cutback across the box, how many goals did they score because they had gotten into the wide areas?
“And I think that’s something that they have found really difficult to find a level of consistency.”
