Motherwell striker Theo Bair says his side have a lot to be proud of after nearly pinching a Premiership top-six spot.
The Steelmen battled back from a goal down against Hibs, thanks to Myziane Maolida’s 65th-minute penalty, with Shane Blaney ripping a shot into the top left corner inside stoppage time.
Then, Oli Shaw made a shot that went just inches past the right post to give a 2-1 victory.
That would have been pointless in the end because Dundee’s draw with Aberdeen secured them a sixth-place finish.#
However, Canadian striker Bair feels they did well to even be in the running when many predicted they would be fighting relegation following a 15-game losing streak.
“It’s impressive that we put so much effort into it and almost made the top six,” Bair stated.
We had a very difficult period, and many people had probably given up on us.
However, as a team, we were aware that we were superior, and the differences during the season were negligible for us.
“The fact that we did push it to this point, I think we have a lot to be proud of and we also still have a lot to play for and a lot to keep going for.
Right now, finishing eighth is the goal. Our goal for the upcoming season is to dominate that second half of the league, and we intend to expand on that.
“We have another chance to beat Hibs. Since Hibs hasn’t defeated us yet this year, we’ll be trying to defeat both Aberdeen and them for points.
Four minutes before Hibs scored the first goal, in the 61st minute, Bair thought he had put Motherwell ahead, but his attempt was ruled offside.
The striker believes his team did enough to win the match and believes that narrow margins are a common occurrence in sport.
“Unfortunately, I saw it back and I was a step or two off, but I guess it’s unlucky,” he remarked.
“I was offside, but I think they called it a little too soon.”
“In football, margins are thin. That’s precisely the nature of football; we were unfortunate to be called for a penalty.
It’s disappointing that it came down to that since I felt we had more in the game than they did, but we still managed to win.
“I believed we had prevailed. At the very least, I believe it’s quite terrible that we lose this time.
“I understand that the alternative outcome eliminated us from the running for the top six, but the two additional points we could have earned at the conclusion of that match could have been crucial.
“However, that doesn’t alter our approach to the split.”
