Transfers involving Newcastle United: Miguel Almiron’s tenure at the team is set.
After receiving strong interest from the Saudi Pro League, Miguel Almiron will remain at Newcastle United.
Al Shabab made a transfer approach for the 29-year-old with the intention of completing a £30 million deal, but the two sides were unable to come to an understanding. Almiron would want to remain at Newcastle, and since the Saudi Pro League transfer window has closed, it appears the winger has received his wish.
During Newcastle’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday, Almiron replaced the injured Alexander Isak in the starting lineup. He was instrumental in The Magpies’ third goal at Villa Park, setting up Jacob Murphy for an effort that Alex Moreno, a Villa defender, bundled in.
Howe stated his happiness in keeping Almiron at St. James’ Park following the game.
“I’m confident he will stay now and I’m delighted because he’s such an important player,” he stated. “What a person and professional he is; he put on an incredible performance against Aston Villa. The media has been speculating about his potential transfer, but it hasn’t affected him in the slightest.
“He didn’t feel anywhere near his best but he put himself on the pitch and performed really well.”
Over the weekend, Howe admitted there was a ‘possibility’ someone could leave the club before the end of the window when asked about Almiron’s situation. But now things appear more clear heading into deadline day.
“There’s a possibility someone could leave before the window shuts,” Howe said on Almiron after the win at Fulham. “I think I made that clear in the press conference. I don’t think that’s changed, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
While Almiron is set to stay at Newcastle, the interest from Saudi Arabia remains with Al Shabab and Public Investment Fund-owned Al Ahli retaining an interest in the winger with a summer move still possible. Al Ahli are the only Saudi Pro League side Newcastle have done business with so far having agreed a £22million transfer for Allan Saint-Maximin last summer.
Almiron joined Newcastle from Atlanta United in 2019 for a then club record £21million. He has gone on to score 30 goals in 196 appearances for the club.
