Newcastle and Norwich manager sacked after nine matches

Ghana fired former Brighton manager Chris Hughton following their group-stage elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana had only two points from their Group B matches, drawing 2-2 with Mozambique and Egypt before losing 2-1 to Cape Verde in their opening encounter.

After the defeat against Cape Verde, Hughton—who has managed Brighton, Norwich, Newcastle, Birmingham, and Nottingham Forest—was also allegedly attacked at the team hotel by a Ghanaian supporter.

A statement from the Ghana FA read: “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

After Hughton was named head coach of Ghana in March 2023, the team played nine games, winning two, drawing three, and losing four.

After five great years with Brighton, the former Tottenham full-back is still regarded as a highly respected person in the community. Before Graham Potter took over as their new manager in 2019, he led them to the Premier League and kept them there for two seasons.
