In County Down, a man drowned after running into trouble while swimming in the sea.
Shortly before 10:00 BST on Wednesday, police, the RNLI, and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were called to Newcastle’s South Promenade area.
After being pulled out of the water and given medical attention by paramedics, the man was pronounced dead on the spot.
His death is not being investigated, according to the police.
The man had been swimming near the lifeboat station, according to the RNLI.
“The inshore lifeboat launched shortly before 10am and the casualty was quickly taken ashore, and casualty care was administered by the lifeboat crew until the arrival of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service,” said a spokesman.
The air ambulance was also dispatched, and two ambulance personnel were sent to the scene.
On social media, members of the Newcastle Sea Swimmers organization shared their sorrow at the news, describing it as a “tragic loss” and stating that their sympathies were with the man’s family.
