Depleted and fatigued, it’s clear Newcastle United need a rest from their punishing schedule but time doesn’t allow.
Over the last week, the Magpies’ squad has taken a major hit and with three fresh injury blows and, of course, the news of Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension.
After the 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend, Elliot Anderson picked up a back injury, which will keep him sidelined for the next eight weeks.
And against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League three days later, Newcastle lost Alexander Isak to a recurring thigh issue and Jacob Murphy to a dislocated shoulder.
In addition to the new injuries and Tonali’s lengthy ban, Newcastle are also without Harvey Barnes (foot) until around late December, while Sven Botman (knee) and Lewis Miley (glandular fever) are getting closer but still unavailable.
Newcastle United is obviously in need of a break from their demanding schedule, but time is of the essence. They are exhausted and worn out.
The Magpies’ roster has suffered greatly over the past week due to three additional injury setbacks and, of course, the announcement of Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension.
Elliot Anderson had a back injury during last weekend’s 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace, and he will be out for the next eight weeks.
And three days later, in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle lost Jacob Murphy to a dislocated shoulder and Alexander Isak to a recurrent thigh problem.
Newcastle will also be missing Harvey Barnes (foot) until late December in addition to the latest injuries and Tonali’s extended suspension. Sven Botman (knee) and Lewis Miley (glandular fever) are getting closer but still unavailable.
Eddie Howe, the head coach of the Magpies, only made one replacement in Saturday’s 2-2 draw away to Wolverhampton Wanderers due to a lack of attacking options.
However, the games never end. Newcastle will play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
Will Howe retrieve any players from the medical facility? NewcastleWorld examines the injury report as of right now and projects when each player will likely return:
1. Sandro Tonali – August 2024
Tonali has been handed a 10 month ban from football following an investigation into illegal betting activity by the Italian Football Federation.
2. Alexander Isak – Chelsea (H) – 25/11
The Swede was forced off just 14 minutes in v Dortmund after suffering a recurrence of his groin problem. Isak has undergone a scan and is unlikely to return before the November international break.
3. Jacob Murphy – TBC
It is feared Murphy will need to undergo surgery on the dislocated shoulder he sustained against Dortmund.
4. Sven Botman – Borussia Dortmund (A) – 07/11
Botman has missed the last seven matches with a knee injury. The Dutchman is back on the grass but hasn’t yet resumed full training.
