Newcastle United step up interest in £45 million treble winner after Tonali controversy

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City, with their efforts set to be ramped up.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Newcastle United have intensified their efforts to sign 27-year-old Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who has struggled to impress at the Etihad Stadium. The Magpies are having to return to the market for a midfielder following Sandro Tonali’s recent betting-related controversy.

Manchester City paid £45 million for the player when they signed him from Leeds United. But the English international has not been able to perform at a high level. His fitness issues have been criticised as well by Pep Guardiola.

The midfield player may need to leave Manchester City in order to restart his career, and a transfer to Newcastle might be the best option for him. The Magpies did a good job assembling a strong team. However, they still need to get better if they want to contend for major awards.

Phillips might end up being a wise addition for them. The 27-year-old has previously demonstrated his talent in the Premier League, and he is eager to do it once more. Newcastle would provide him with the much-needed fresh start.

The 27-year-old was a key player for club and country prior to his move to Manchester City, and he will want to get back to that level once again. It is fair to assume that he could be available for a reasonable price in the coming months given his performance at Manchester City. Newcastle might be able to snap him up on a bargain.

The Magpies signed Sandro Tonali from AC Milan during the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old has been quite impressive at his new club. But he was recently involved in an illegal beating scandal.

There are rumours that he could face a lengthy ban if his involvement is proven. In that case, Newcastle need another defensive midfielder and Phillips would be a quality acquisition. He is well-settled in the Premier League and could make an immediate impact. His determination to succeed will be an added bonus for Newcastle.

According to reports, Phillips is open to joining Newcastle United in the interim. It would be interesting to see if the Magpies follow up on their interest by making a formal offer to sign the player in January. It’s possible that Manchester City would prefer not to deplete their team midway through the campaign.

They are already short on depth in the middle midfield area and will be vying for big titles. Phillips is a valuable member of the squad even though he does not start for the triple winners very often.
