Police confirm total number of fan arrests following Newcastle United vs Borussia Dortmund fixture

Police have said the majority of fans behaved respectfully.

Northumbria Police has confirmed a total of eight people were arrested for incidents around the Champions\ League fixture between Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

There was a large police presence in the city centre before the game as German fans made their way to St James Park as part of a fan march from Grey’s Monument with small incidents occurring through the walk, which lasted around 20 minutes.

Other arrests came for possession of pyrotechnics and selling fake tickets.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “During the policing operation for last night’s (Wednesday) match between Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund, eight men and one woman were arrested for a range of offences, including criminal damage, possession of a flare and a report of selling fake tickets.

“The event passed largely without incident, with the overwhelming majority of both home and away fans behaving respectfully and appropriately.

“Any pockets disorder which were identified were swiftly dealt with by officers on scene.

“We will continue to review any further reports from the event to establish if further criminal offences have taken place, and take robust action where required.
