The goalkeeper’s outrageous wage demands seem to be impeding Newcastle United’s chances of signing him.
With PIF ownership, the Magpies are certainly not short on cash. The Saudi owners have supported Eddie Howe during every transfer window he has presided over, and due to a goalkeeping dilemma, Newcastle may need to relocate once more in January.
The majority of the season has seen Nick Pope out, while Martin Dubravka has also had difficulty since returning to the fold.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is one name associated with Newcastle. Since leaving Old Trafford in the summer, the Spaniard has been without a club, and it appears that the Mags are giving him some thought.
But Estadio Deportivo claims that De Gea is asking for astronomical sums of money in order to sign with a new team.
According to reports, De Gea has to be paid almost £17 million a year, or £350,000 a week, before he will even think about joining with Newcastle or any other interested parties.
It’s clear that players are aware of Newcastle’s financial offer in terms of the contracts they are being given.
The Mags have invested extensively in certain long-term contracts and spent a respectable amount, but they have also been extremely cautious not to go overboard in terms of FFP.
Another debate is whether or not they will consider it worthwhile to invest such a large amount of money to sign De Gea to a short-term deal.
Given that De Gea hasn’t shown much interest since leaving United in the summer, it seems strange that the player, who isn’t even playing, can expect such figures.
Although we are aware that De Gea is a “world-class” goalkeeper, he will likely be rusty, and paying £350,000 a week for someone who isn’t even playing is a significant expense.
If this is the expense, Newcastle ought to think about other possibilities.
