Former Premier League referee passes brutal verdict on Newport County

Incident: Possible red card (Newport County)

Decision: Yellow card awarded (Newport County)

According to Foy, the referee must consider a number of factors when determining whether or not the Newport County No. 2 challenge qualifies for a red card due to serious foul play.

“The player starts the challenge by throwing out a straight leg. Additionally, he is not on the ground, which means he has no control over the challenge.

“Luckily, the player from Barrow avoids being hit too hard during the challenge, which may be the reason the Newport player isn’t sent off.

“However, with the foot raised and a challenge made with excessive force that endangers the safety of the opponent, this falls under the criteria of serious foul play and the correct decision would’ve been to award a straight red card.”
