Jay Bilas has an idea that he believes would put a stop to fans storming the court after college basketball games, and it would be an understatement to say the suggestion has not received much support.
Bilas spoke about court storming on Monday and was critical of NCAA officials for not doing more to discourage it. The longtime analyst suggested that police should issue citations and detain fans who storm the court.
“They could end it tomorrow if they so desired. The administrators will tell you that they have been advised by security experts that trying to put an end to court storming is not a good idea since doing so would make matters worse rather than better. Bilas stated, “But you don’t have to stop the court storming.” “All you have to do is make sure they stay on the court once they enter there. Simply state that everyone is under arrest, issue citations to each of them, or make an arrest if necessary. The next day, the court storming will end.
In certain cases, thousands of fans swarm the court. Is Bilas implying that in an instance such as that, law enforcement and security personnel would be able to hold every fan? Richard Jefferson, Bilas’ coworker at ESPN, referred to the concept as “asinine” and “the dumbest thing I have ever heard.”
Following the Blue Devils’ 83-79 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday, some supporters collided with Duke player Kyle Filipowski, injuring his ankle. This has refocused the conversation over court storming. Here is a link to view the video.
Jon Scheyer, the head coach of Duke, wants court storming to be outlawed by the NCAA. Naturally, Bilas was once a star player for Duke. Some believe that if it weren’t for the most recent incident concerning his alma mater, he would not be as fervent about the cause.
