Sean McWilliams, a midfielder for Northampton Town, has expressed his desire to remain with the team after this summer.
Regarding the player’s long-term future, Northampton Town must make a decision.
At the end of this season, McWilliams, 25, will have his contract expire and will be eligible to become a free agent.
He has told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo: “There’s seven games to play this season and we’ll just see how things go but there always conversations going on in the background. I think myself and the club both know where we stand and I’m not in a place where I want to leave so we’ll see how it plays out.”
Northampton Town man outlines stance
It would be devastating for Northampton to lose McWilliams for nothing in late June.
He has stated that he does not intend to leave Sixfields anytime soon, so the League One team needs to work quickly to get him an extension.
The man, who was raised in their academy, is from Northampton and has served his local team admirably in recent years.
Following a non-league loan stint at King’s Lynn Town in 2017, McWilliams made his debut in the first team and hasn’t looked back.
He has made 218 Cobblers appearances overall, 28 of which have been this season, and he has contributed six goals.
He was part of the League Two team that the club promoted from twice before.
In addition to Leyton Orient, Stevenage, and Carlisle United, Jon Brady’s team was promoted from the fourth division the previous season and has done a fantastic job adjusting to life at the top level.
With seven games remaining, they are comfortably in the middle of the table in 14th place.
The last time Northampton played, they were defeated 2-0 away at Wycombe Wanderers. This weekend, they will play at home against Derby County, who are vying for promotion.
