City boss delivers transfer status check:

David Wagner admits it is all quiet on the transfer front for Norwich City, and the head coach is in no rush to offload his fringe players either.

The Canaries have not made a move midway through the January transfer window, in a trend repeated across the top two divisions with little in the way of permanent business completed.

“At the minute it is quiet,” said Wagner, on potential City additions. “We all together know that normally, mostly, it accelerates at the end of the window. And I have the feeling it’s a quiet window, in general. But I have the feeling as well, like always at the end of the window, everything accelerates again. So we’ll see what will happen.”

Loan striker Hwang Ui-Jo returned to Nottingham Forest, while Tony Springett is the latest youngster allowed out on loan, after moving to League One Northampton. Jaden Warner could join the loan exodus, when he recovers from illness, but Wagner is unwilling to sanction senior exits for those not featuring regularly.

“Today, it looks a good squad in terms of numbers. But in two weeks time, it can be totally different,” he said. “This is why I can’t give a serious answer on this question, because everything can change so quickly. And we’ve experienced it this season, how everything can change, injury-wise or the availability of certain players, and this is why I’m quite calm on this.

“Obviously, you have to judge every single individual, every single situation at the time when the question comes. But at the moment, I’m calm on this, because I know how quickly things can change in football.

“To be totally honest, Tony had a good pre-season and came on in a lot of games, especially in the first part of the season. He is a great lad who works unbelievably hard and is tactically very good as well. His heart is in the right place.

“But unfortunately he didn’t produce an end product in the games and opportunities which he had, and this is the thing which he has to improve and he will improve for sure. This is why we were all open for this loan.

“Because for offensive players there have to be some numbers you produce and unfortunately with the opportunities which he had, he was not able to do so. He was a little bit unlucky as well. But this is now why we decided, ‘Okay, he has to get to more game time and then better numbers, in terms of goals and assists, to make this next step and this hopefully we can do now. We wish him the very best.”

Centre back Warner made his first team debut earlier this season under Wagner but has been linked with loan interest this month from the likes of Notts County and Stockport.

“It’s quite early in the window. And I think it’s too early to give a serious answer on that. It could be an option. Yes,” said Wagner. “But we have now a lot of games in front of us in this transfer window. And I think then we have a better picture, then we can decide what is best for Jaden. And this could be an option that he goes on loan as well.”
