Norwich City to cash £25m on two players this summer

FLW’s Norwich City fan pundit looked at how the transfer window will shape up for his side

The Canaries were trounced 4-0 at Elland Road, destroying their promotion hopes, and manager David Wagner was sacked as a result, leaving the club looking for a new manager.

This summer will be a new beginning at Carrow Road, and while it remains to be seen who will be chosen as the club’s next head coach, some players will likely draw transfer interest during the summer months.

Norwich were relegated from the Premier League in May 2022, therefore this will be their final season of parachute payments as they enter their third season in the Championship.

With its parachute payments scheduled to expire next year, the club may be compelled to cash in on star players this summer to ensure the Canaries are left on a secure financial footing for the future.

Following an impressive breakthrough campaign, Jon Rowe will attract transfer interest this summer, just as he did in January.

Wolves have been credited with interest in the 21-year-old recently, and it’s likely that other clubs will join the race in the weeks to come.

He was the subject of transfer interest from Spurs in January, but remained at Carrow Road and has struggled with injuries during the second-half of the season.

However, our Norwich City fan pundit, Zeke Downes, believes that the club will need to sell Rowe if they’re to make new signings this summer, although the likes of Josh Sargent and Gabriel Sara are tipped to stay to try and get the Norfolk outfit back in the top flight.

Zeke said Football League World, “I don’t see many of our star players leaving.” Maybe that’s just blind hope, but in order to recruit players, we’ll most likely have to sell one or two.

I can see (Christos) Tzolis going; if Fortuna Düsseldorf’s stock does not rise, they will be unable to afford to buy him, allowing us to command a higher fee. I would keep him because he is very good and we have never given him a chance.

“I think Adam Idah is going to depart, albeit without him, we’re left with just one striker, but I think (Josh) Sargent will stay, (Borja) Sainz will stay, (Gabriel) Sara will stay, but I think Rowe may leave.

Despite reaching the play-offs last season, it’s clear that plenty of Norwich City supporters weren’t overly pleased with how the season went, hence David Wagner’s sacking.

Appointing a new manager, coupled with plenty of experienced players being released this summer, suggests that Canaries’ Sporting Director Ben Knappper realises the scale of what needs to be done this summer.

Selling players like Jon Rowe is not ideal, since the 21-year-old is undoubtedly one of Norwich’s top players, if not the greatest, but the money could be poured back into the club, providing them greater depth and a more balanced group, allowing them to be more competitive next season.

Also, as Zeke mentioned above, Rowe’s departure will give players like Abu Kamara the opportunity to prove what he’s capable of following a successful loan spell at Portsmouth.

Despite their recent play-off failure and Jon Rowe’s seemingly inevitable exit, Norwich City has reasons to be optimistic.

A reconstruction this summer might see them in a better position both financially and on the pitch, and with the Championship possibly looking weaker next season than it has been during the current campaign, the Canaries should be targeting promotion.
