Taiwo Awoniyi’s the manager of Nottingham Forest, has updated the status of striker Taiwo Awoniyi’s fitness.
The 26-year-old striker missed games against Crystal Palace and Luton Town due to a groyne strain he sustained during the 1-1 draw against Brentford back in October.
Last Sunday, in the 3-0 loss against Liverpool, Awoniyi made his comeback to action by coming on as a substitute for Willy Boly in the 70th minute.
But manager Cooper has acknowledged that he’s not sure if the striker will start on Sunday afternoon against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
Cooper about Awoniyi’s health
Cooper acknowledged that he and the Reds’ number nine are frustrated by Awoniyi’s circumstances at his pre-game press conference yesterday.
“We have to handle Taiwo [Awoniyi], as his ailment is a persistent one that will last for a short term.
He is more frustrated than anybody else since it is seriously impeding his ability to continue performing well.
It hasn’t been as easy as he is back training and totally fit; this is something and a process we will have to deal with for a while.
“We hope he is available for the weekend, but it could go either way. We’ll see if he is.”
Forest lacking in population
Chris Wood is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury, and Divock Origi has not been given a comeback date, so Cooper may not have a reliable centre striker on Sunday.
Last Saturday, Anthony Elanga, a winger, made his debut in a central role against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, and it was evident that he was playing in an unfamiliar position.
Cooper and the supporters of Forest will be praying that Awoniyi has a successful conclusion because the 26-year-old has been one of the Reds’ top players thus far in the season.
