Dharmesh Sheth reports that Nottingham Forest has now approached West Ham about a loan agreement for Maxwel Cornet.
West Ham will consider any reasonable offers, the Sky Sports reporter continued via the broadcaster’s live transfer blog [30 January, 09:23].
Although Cornet’s contract at London Stadium expires in 2027, United has the option to extend it by an additional year if they so choose.
Ownered by billionaire Evangelos Marinakis, Forest has until Thursday, February 1 at 11 p.m. to finalise a deal.
Hard one
Since moving to West Ham from Burnley in August 2022, Cornet’s career has never really taken off, so it makes sense to cash in if you can.
United will want to recover as much of the £17.5 million they paid to sign Cornet as possible.
But for the time being, Forest only seems interested in a loan agreement, which could present West Ham with a difficult choice.
If so, that would at least place the Ivorian in the storefront window before it leaves permanently in the summer.
However, even if Cornet plays little, David Moyes would be without an attacking option for the next four months.
This deal might ultimately depend on the Irons’ ability to acquire another attacker first, as they rank former Celtic star Jota highly.
Any United supporter would be happy to see Jota in and Cornet out if that were the case.
In other West Ham news, it has been reported that the Irons’ attempt to sign a foreign player has encountered an unforeseen obstacle.
