Nottingham Forest transfer explained after £14m Chelsea call

Current Nottingham Forest transfer rumors are explained, including a summertime raid for Djordje Petrovic prior to his Chelsea transfer.

During the summer transfer window of 2023, Nottingham Forest was “priced out” of a move for goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

The goalie, who was then with the New England Revolution, is rumored to have received an offer from the Reds that would have made him the first choice at the City Ground. That eventually fell through, and he signed a £14 million deal to join Chelsea.

Forest went on to sign both Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos, while target Dean Henderson joined Crystal Palace. But The Standard confirm the original plan was to sign Petrovic.

Steve Cooper was up against French club Nantes and Manchester United, who both desired Petrovic as their number two. It was said that a move would be “priced out” for all three parties.

Former Villa and United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel told the national paper what qualities Petrovic brings to the Premier League, making it clear what the Reds could have had.

“I wasn’t surprised he joined Chelsea at all,” Friedel said. “I told a couple of other Premier League clubs they should come in for him.

“For the past few seasons, he has been the MLS’s best-performing goalkeeper, hands down. Excellent positioning, reflexes, balance, and quickness characterize him.

“Between his age, his athleticism, shot-stopping, consistency and mentality — he can be very good in the Premier League.”
