Nottingham Forest striker was given a travel ban by police after he was allegedly caught on camera having sex without his partners’ consent.
The ban was declared on Thursday by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, which also stated that it went into force on Tuesday.
Reacting to what was apparently an overzealous probe, Hwang allegedly filed a request to have the police officer looking into his case replaced.
Hwang was called in and questioned by the police on November 18, as well as on December 12 and 15. The press was not informed of the subsequent two summonses, during which Hwang allegedly contended that his girlfriend was aware of the filming but did not object.
Hwang refused to appear for another round of questioning by the deadline of December 27, as instructed by the police.
The probe was sparked by an Instagram post made in June of last year by an unnamed person claiming to be Hwang’s former girlfriend. The user uploaded a video of a nude male holding hands with a woman, claiming it was Hwang.
In addition, she charged Hwang with having simultaneous sexual connections with other women and recording intimate moments without getting permission. Later that month, Hwang filed a defamation and blackmail lawsuit and refuted the accusations.
On Nov. 16, the person was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of blackmail. Subsequently, it was disclosed that the individual detained was Hwang’s sister-in-law.
After authorities examined the leaked video and called Hwang for interrogation on the grounds that he may have recorded the films without permission in late November, the case took a different turn. On November 18, Hwang made an appearance before the police, and the inquiry is still proceeding.
Hwang, who was expected to start as Korea’s first striker for the forthcoming Asian Cup, was not included in the Korean roster after he was suspended from the national team on November 28.
Hwang joined Forest in 2022, however he has been on loan to the team for the majority of that time. Hwang began the 2023–24 season at Norwich City after stints with Olympiacos and FC Seoul. However, the Championship team ended the loan early this month. Despite never playing in the Premier League for Forest, he is officially back with the team.
