A leading sports lawyer tells i that Premier League clubs could face legal action from rivals for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations
In some way, keeping the peace among the Premier League’s member teams was one of Richard Scudamore’s greatest accomplishments during his nearly two decades in office.
It was possibly even more significant than turning the apex of English football into one of Britain’s top exporters worldwide and a multibillion-pound sector that is now the envy of the whole football community.
The “product,” as it has come to be known in the business world, might not have gained as much traction as it did if there hadn’t been an underlying cohesiveness among the teams.
And that was no simple feat. The world of the top flight is one of rival groups, egos, politics, brutality, and betrayal that wouldn’t seem out of place in an HBO series. Scudamore, however, was able to keep the parts together even though it seemed like the seams were deteriorating.
Might everything be about to change?
With accusations of various degrees presently made against Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Everton in two different cases, the Premier League is embarking on a new era of accountability.
Chelsea is still being investigated for possible financial irregularities that may have occurred under Roman Abramovich’s ownership and that the current owners self-reported when they found them during due diligence for the takeover in 2022.
