Notts County play-off final defeat has been ‘haunting’ Chesterfield midfielder’

Mike Jones says Chesterfield’s play-off final heartache has been ‘haunting’ him all season.

The Spireites ultimately lost to Notts County at Wembley on penalties, but they were only three minutes from being promoted back to the EFL.

However, Town is 20 points ahead of the pack with nine games left, so they won’t require the play-offs this year. Next weekend, they might win the championship away at Oldham Athletic.

He said to BBC Radio Sheffield, “It hurt me for a long time and still haunts me now.” “It hurts and sticks with you for a long time when you come that close to anything like that. We have all been carrying that burning within us this year, which is why our performances have been so brutal. We’ve chosen not to take any chances this year, which has put us in this situation and led to our impending completion.

“Being a part of it is really pleasant. I will always be appreciative that the gaffer allowed me to have this chance. Even if we didn’t win last year, I thought we learned a lot from it and the gaffer had the proper people on board. I believe that this year has been different for them since they have the experience.

In Chesterfield’s 4-1 victory over AFC Fylde on Saturday, Jones scored his first goal for the team. Moreover, it was his first objective since October 2020.

That feels like a lifetime ago, he remarked. Getting one today is quite pleasant. The guys have been joking about it and saying things like “when it finally happens, they will be made up.”

It was also being claimed by the annoying Tom Naylor, but Jones was having none of it.

“It felt nice to me and I thought why not,” Jones chuckled. I was thrilled to watch it go in after I caught it properly. Tom is a lovely boy, but I believe I will keep it as he has enough ambitions for this year! Although it’s not actually my job, I would love to get more.”

Chesterfield rallied admirably from their 4-1 loss to Dorking Wanderers last Saturday, and they now only need eight more points to win the division.

Jones stated: “After last week, we were all in pain. We weren’t prepared for this somewhat embarrassing loss, but we have put it right

This week, the gaffer was very irate with us for playing aggressively and quickly. We realised that in order to win the game, we had to constantly be in their faces. We felt comfortable, so it was terrible to lose 3-1, but winning 4-1 right away encapsulates our attitude for the entire season.

“It was a fantastic way to recover from a disappointing loss last week and an overwhelming victory.”
