Magpies fans had been starved of action in English football’s top four division for several seasons following their relegation to the non-league back in 2019 for the first time in their 157-year history.
Having stumbled in the play-offs in the previous three seasons, Notts were able to finally return to League Two under the guidance of now Swansea City boss, Luke Williams. Under his stewardship, they amassed a whopping 107 points last term, but had to settle for second place with Hollywood-owner Wrexham clinching the league title.
However, promotion was earned on a thrilling afternoon in the capital after the team overcame twice to defeat East Midlands rivals Chesterfield on penalties.
The team, which is currently led by Stuart Maynard, has had a challenging start to 2024 but is still in the running for the playoffs.
This season, attendance at Meadow Lane and on the road has increased as a result of this success, but which celebrities are most well-known to be lining the terraces?
Vicky McClure, an actress who has performed in several popular TV series and films, including This Is England and Line of Duty, is the first well-known Magpies supporter.
The forty-year-old, who was born and raised in Nottingham, was honoured with an MBE recently for her contributions to charity and theatre. In addition, a tram in the city bears her name.
Being a lifetime Notts supporter, McClure witnessed the spectacular return of her team to the Football League when they defeated Chesterfield in the National League play-off final. After Cedwyn Scott’s jab, the actress shared her happiness at the Magpies’ triumph under the Wembley arch on Twitter with a video.
Next up on the list is singer-songwriter Jake Bugg. The 30-year-old Clifton native began playing the guitar at the age of 12, having been exposed to the instrument by his uncle.
The performer has always supported the Magpies and in November 2017 signed on as a jersey sponsor for the Meadow Lane club. The club declared in September 2020 that Bugg would support the team’s away jersey for the 2020–2021 campaign. Since then, Bugg has supported the team for four seasons running.
Flat racing jockey Hayley Turner is one of the few well-known Notts supporters who works in the sports world. Turner made history in 2008 when she rode 100 victories of UK flat races in a single calendar year.
She was born two miles from Nottingham Racecourse in the city’s north. She joined ITV Racing after initially retiring from racing in 2015, but she later made a comeback to the track in 2018 and has since rode four wins at Royal Ascot.
She won Royal Ascot for the first time as a female since 1987, and for her achievements to the sport over her two-decade professional career, she even received an OBE.
The last well-known Notts fan is also in the movie business, having collaborated with fellow Pie Vicky McClure on projects as an actress, director, and screenwriter.
At the age of 20, Shane Meadows relocated to the East Midlands and enrolled in a performing arts course at Burton College, where he initially made the acquaintance and eventual partner Paddy Considine.
During his career, the 51-year-old has produced a number of noteworthy motion pictures and television shows. He collaborated with McClure on the set of This Is England, and most recently, he produced Charity Shop Sue, which was featured on YouTube.
