LIVE updates as forensics descend on scene near Longsight Market after stabbing

A murder investigation is underway following the death of a man who was found unconscious in the street. Police have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of murder following the incident on Abbey Hills Road, in Oldham, yesterday evening (September 2).

After receiving reports of a person unconscious in the street, officers found a 45-year-old man with a serious head injury. Despite best efforts of the emergency services, he tragically died a short time later.

Greater Manchester Police currently believes the man was assaulted. Officers arrested the 38-year-old man today (Tuesday). He was taken into police custody, where he remains at this time for questioning.

Enquiries are ongoing. Officers are appealing to members of the public who may have relevant information to come forward.

Superintendent Jane Higham said: “The thoughts of the entire investigation team remain with the victim’s family at this time. This has come as devastating news to the family and we are committed to getting answers for them and establishing the cause of his death.

“We are treating this as a murder investigation and it is believed that the man was assaulted. We are carrying out multiple lines of enquiry and are also appealing to anyone with information about this incident to make a report to police.
