A major road in Oldham has been closed by police and paramedics this afternoon after someone was struck by an HGV.
Following the collision this afternoon, an air ambulance was dispatched to the scene on Manchester Road, and there is currently a significant police presence there as well. Between Old Lane and Frederick Street, the northbound lanes of the road are blocked.

Traffic ‘horrendous’ with main routes ‘gridlocked’
Traffic in the area is “horrendous,” according to a witness at the scene, as police continue to investigate the serious collision that occurred earlier today.
“Trails through Chadderton are congested,” they declared. There is terrible traffic. It serves as Oldham’s main thoroughfare.
Police continue to block the northbound side of Manchester Road this afternoon.
Air ambulance landed at nearby park
Nearby Werneth Park was the landing site of the air ambulance that was dispatched to the scene.
The witness, who happens to live nearby, reported that the helicopter touched down just before 1pm.
HGV seen in middle of road
This afternoon, a big HGV with a load strapped to the back was spotted in the centre of Manchester Road.
Police and traffic cops are still on the scene, and the main road is still blocked.
Police issue statement on horror collision and appeal for witnesses
A detailed statement regarding the incident this afternoon has now been released by Greater Manchester Police.
The force has started an investigation into the collision and is looking for witnesses.
“At around 12.35pm today (Wednesday, August 21, 2024), we were called to reports of a collision between a Heavy Goods Vehicle and a pedestrian on Manchester Road, Oldham,” a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson stated.
“A man in his 70s who was a pedestrian has been taken to the hospital to receive treatment for his wounds. The HGV driver stayed at the scene and is helping the police with their investigation; no arrests have been made.
“We’re still looking into it.
We are requesting that anyone with dashcam or mobile footage, or any other type of CCTV footage, get in touch with police us on 101 quoting log number 1416 of 21/08/2024.”

A sizable truck is also visible in the middle of the road, and traffic police are still on the scene.
Man in his 70s hit by HGV
As of right now, police have confirmed that the man in his 70s was struck by the HGV this afternoon.
Around 1:35 p.m., the emergency services were initially contacted.
Although his health and the extent of his injuries are unknown, he has been admitted to the hospital so that he can receive medical attention.

Manchester Road’s northbound carriageway is completely closed this afternoon.
