Murders of mother, daughter in Oldham

This season of “Hometown Tragedy” on the Very Local App centres on the horrifying killings of a mother and daughter in Oldham County, Kentucky.

The case was dubbed the Bitter Blood Case.
It was heavily covered by WLKY, and a large portion of the video was taken from the station’s archives.

WLKY reporter Steve Burgin remarked, “The way they were shot, it would almost look like an execution-style slaying.”

The incident took place on June 21,

Following the murder of an affluent family’s mother and daughter, Oldham County police were perplexed.

“We had a good idea that Delores was the intended victim. It was just that Janie was in the wrong place at the wrong time. “This woman possesses millions of dollars and ample insurance,” stated Oldham County police officer Dennis Clark.

At their Prospect, Kentucky, home, Delores Lynch and her daughter Jane Lynch were discovered dead from gunshot wounds.

“The community of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has been rocked by the murders of three of its affluent residents, 85-year-old Hattie Newsome, her 65-year-old son Robert, and his 63-year-old wife, Florence, were found dead Sunday,” WLKY News reporter Steve Burgin reported at the time.

A triple killing in North Carolina one year after the Oldham County murders sparked a search that ultimately produced an improbable suspect in both instances.

“From that point of investigation, things stalled until we got a phone call from North Carolina,” Clark explained.

There were similarities between the Kentucky case and the triple murder case in North Carolina, according to the lead detective.

“May 19, Sunday. When the phone rang to inform me of the triple homicide, I was asleep. At that moment, it was evident that this couldn’t be a coincidence. Detective Allen Gentry of Forsyth County, North Carolina, stated that there “has to be a link here.”

That connection proved to be Susie Newsom Lynch, the former daughter-in-law of Delores Lynch, and Fritz Klenner, Susie’s cousin.

Just as authorities were closing in to take them into custody, Klenner ended up setting off an explosion that killed him, Susie, and Susie’s two small sons.

Watch the whole episode of “Hometown Tragedy” on the Very Local app to learn how investigators connected these two murder cases, which occurred in different states, and what was found after the horrific conclusion.
