Why Mellon made brilliant striker first on list signing January..

The 20-year-old originally came to Oldham on a youth loan from Wigan Athletic, lasting one month.

Alex Reid is still out with a muscle injury, meaning he will not be playing for his former club, but Stones will start right away against Solihull.

“He (Stones) is a really highly rated young player who’s experienced in non-league and going to Wigan,” Mellon stated.

“He’s the kind of person we want running the club. We will keep trying to bring in some new faces because we felt it was necessary.

“I still believe that we should strive to achieve more because Josh will support us in taking the first steps towards the consistency that we want to see from the Oldham team.

“He’s a striker who will put himself about, who has a lot of great qualities that we believe will make us more of a force.”

When asked if a striker had been considered a top pick, Mellon replied, “I believe we evaluate the entire team.” Although I truly love the players here and enjoy working with them, I also have to consider the results of the games because, in the end, the owners and supporters will want me to assemble a team that pleases them, and I felt that occasionally we haven’t been able to do that. I will therefore take advantage of the chance to invite people in order to try and get closer to fulfilling that for them.

“I don’t want anyone to believe that I’ll be going door-to-door. We’ll examine the matter.

“I believe that Gary (Brabin), Paul (Murray), Darren (Royle), and I know a lot of people—agents, managers, and players—and we frequently receive offers from various players to come play here.

“I think the way it will work is if we think it’s better than what we’ve got and it gives us a better chance giving the supporters and the owners the team that they want then we would go all out to try to bring them in.”
