KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – Two people were killed and three others were injured in a deadly crash involving an ambulance in Tennessee, according to law enforcement.
I-40 East in Knoxville is back open after a deadly multi-vehicle crash shut down the interstates Saturday morning.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers responded to I-40 East just west of Midway Road just after 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Based on the investigation conducted at the scene, police say two eastbound vehicles were involved in a rear-end crash. One vehicle ended up in a travel lane, and the other vehicle overturned and rolled across all three lanes, landing off the road in the median.
A third vehicle became involved after a passerby stopped to help the vehicle that was still stopped on the highway.
The vehicle of the person who stopped to help was then struck by a Priority Ambulance traveling to Cocke County that was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision, police said.
Both the helper and the driver of the vehicle that was stopped on the highway were pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday, police identified the helper as 45-year-old Juan Carlos Herrera Gomez, of Knoxville, and the driver as 76-year-old Lee Boone, of Virginia.
