Fans queries Oldham Athletic strategy as club loses another star without replacement

Less than a week after Chris Conn-Clarke was sold to Peterborough United for a club-record fee, the Robins have snapped up a proven finisher who has been on Parkinson’s radar since leaving Aberdeen to join Blackburn Rovers in 2017.

“I’ve been after Joe since meeting him seven years ago, but I’ve never been able to get him over the line for one reason or another,” said the Alty boss. “The main reason back then was that it was Altrincham or Blackburn. I guess I can handle that decision, but now it’s perfect timing for us and him to work together.

“Last season, there were moments when we were a touch short in height and muscle. He will give us that for sure, but I don’t want him to be perceived as merely a huge target man. That would be an inaccurate representation of his outstanding ball skills.

He’s just an excellent football player, and I’m happy that we were able to close this deal. He will give us a whole new dimension in some games that we haven’t had before because the boys are already here.

Nuttall stated, “I’m delighted to get it all done so early and to get going and meet the boys,” indicating that the timing of his arrival, which occurs just before the start of pre-season training, suited him well. Additionally, I’m excited to start working.

Bury-born Nuttall, an England C cap bearer and a graduate of Manchester City’s Academy, previously played for Aberdeen, Blackburn, Blackpool, and Scunthorpe United before signing a three-year contract with Oldham in December 2022.

Tommy Uda, who left his position as sports therapist in 2021 to register in a two-year master’s program in physiotherapy, has also returned to Alty as head physiotherapist.
