Why Oldham part company with first team coach

The 47-year-old returned to the club in June 2023 to head up the club’s academy.

The former midfielder, who made over 100 appearances for Latics between December 2001 and May 2004, left a similar position at the club in difficult circumstances under the previous regime.

Earlier this season, he went on to combine those duties with being first team coach under manager Micky Mellon, having taken caretaker charge of the team in their FA Cup fourth round qualifying game at Altrincham in October, which Latics won 1-0.

The following was stated in a statement from the team: “Paul Murray has departed Oldham Athletic by mutual consent.

Murray resigned from his dual roles as first team coach and academy manager from the previous season. He had also served as interim manager for the FA Cup victory at . “We would like to thank Paul for his work for the club during all of his spells at Boundary Park, including since his return last June, and we wish him well for the future,” the statement reads.

The Oldham Times has been informed that Latics are not seeking a replacement for the first team coach position. Additionally, the club’s academy has concluded under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) after failing to secure promotion back to the Football League within the two-year period that followed their EFL relegation.
