In an effort to keep WILL Goodwin safe following his recuperation from a quad injury, Oxford United did not include him in their matchday squad last night.
The 21-year-old striker made his U.S. debut on Saturday against Blackpool, playing the last 30 minutes of the match. Rather than risk him playing three games in a week, it was decided to leave him out of last night’s game.
Prior to the victory over Wigan Athletic, Goodwin conducted his regular training routine. Des Buckingham, the head coach of United, verified that the centre forward would be fit for the weekend’s trip to Wycombe Wanderers.
“Will’s okay,” he said. There was always the intention of going back with him because of his severe quad injury.
“The medical staff believed it was better to get him right because it was Saturday, Tuesday, and Saturday. We could have played him, but since it’s too fast, too early, and you’re putting him in danger, you probably lose him for Saturday.
This year, we’ve witnessed that when we’ve played players and hurried them back too early on Saturday and Tuesday.
“We don’t want to do that with Will. We’ve got 14 games still to come, and he’ll be alright for Saturday.”
Goodwin joined the U’s last month, signing from Cheltenham Town, where he scored six goals in 16 Sky Bet League One games this season.
