Following the debut of new striker Will Goodwin for Oxford United, Mark Harris hopes to challenge for the position of centre forward on the team.
Goodwin joined the U’s from Cheltenham Town last month, but he was unable to play in any of the team’s first four games due to a minor quad injury.
But he did make his United debut when he entered the game just after the hour in a 1-1 draw with Blackpool off the bench.
After Tyler Goodrham was substituted, the striker moved straight up front, and Harris—who had earlier tied the score for the U’s—shifted to the right side.
“I’ll play wherever I’m put, but I want to stay up front because I enjoy playing there,” Harris stated.
Will has joined us, and it’s clear that he’s a talented player. He’s going to play, so if I have to move wide to accommodate him, I hope to be of assistance by either scoring or dishing out assists.
“I’ll be content as long as I’m on the pitch.”
Harris continued to have a purple patch in front of goal against Blackpool, scoring his seventh goal in nine games in 2024.
It comes after he went 11 games without a goal in all competitions to close out 2023. Before scoring on New Year’s Day, he went 18 games without a goal in Sky Bet League One.
“After going a few months without one, it’s nice. Although scoring is enjoyable, getting three points is what matters most, Harris stated.
We’re a little let down by that. Although it’s probably a fair outcome and both teams had good opportunities, we’re a little disappointed that we didn’t win the three points.
“The boys are pushing for starts, and the boys who are starting have got to maintain their place,” he continued.
“We have a strong team on the horizon, and a few more players need to return. If we can keep everyone healthy and productive through the final few games, we should be in the right place.
