Oxford manager Des Buckingham claims that the team exercised due investigation prior to acquiring Jay Matete from Sunderland, taking into account the midfielder’s recuperation from an extended knee injury.
Matete had the injury in the preseason and was unable to resume training at Sunderland until December, when he participated in an Arsenal under-21 game. The 22-year-old did not play for the first team last month, although he was later listed as a reserve for Sunderland’s Championship match against Ipswich on January 13.
As a result, Matete was sent on loan to Oxford until the end of the season. On Saturday, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Reading, coming off the bench in the 89th minute.
Following Matete’s injury setback, Buckingham was questioned about the midfielder’s abilities and state. “He’s very strong and powerful, good one v one, and a defensive type of midfielder, which is very few around the league, but also someone that on the ball, can contribute to our attacking play,” Buckingham said.
