Top Flight Side Make Move For Oxford United Promotion Winner

The Northern Irish international has struggled to make his mark for The U’s since his move from Dungannon Swifts in January 2022, only making a total of 25 appearances for the club.

Oxford United have offloaded one of their promotion-winning midfielders in Oisin Smyth to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

He was loaned out to National League challengers Solihull Moors for a month-long loan following a tough spell under now-Salford City boss Karl Robinson in January 2023.

Under Liam Manning, he gained more first-team action but was still limited to time, only playing 16 times for Oxford. the 38-year-old departed for Bristol City in November, with Des Buckingham guiding the team to the Championship via the League One Playoff Final against Bolton Wanderers.

Smyth won the club’s Goal of the Season title this season after making his debut start for the team on New Year’s Day and scoring an incredible goal against Charlton Athletic in a 2-1 victory.

Stuart Findlay was loaned out to Kilmarnock for a second season in a row by Oxford this window, thus this is not the first time a player from Oxford has moved north of the border. After arriving at The Saints, the 24-year-old revealed to club reporters, “I’ve been very impressed with the facilities.” I am very eager to start playing right now.

“Watching the team play last season and seeing how well they performed was a big part. A handful were present.

My conversations with the manager went rather well at first. Our main conversation topic was player development and his ability to improve players. For me, game time was a major consideration. The key goal is to play football and enjoy myself again, which is why I came here.

“I’ve played deeper and more forward in a couple different roles over my career. I’m willing to appear when needed.

With a fifth-place finish and a spot in the Europa Conference League qualification round, Stephen Robinson’s team had a great league season.
