Man dies following fatal collision

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is appealing for witnesses and footage from the scene of a road collision involving Sussex Police, after which a man died.

On Wednesday, August 27, at approximately 11:10 p.m., an unmarked police vehicle and a 27-year-old male on foot collided on Peacehaven’s A259 South Coast Road. A short while later, the man’s death was tragically confirmed at the scene.

We dispatched investigators to the location and followed the police post-incident protocol after receiving notification from Sussex Police, and we subsequently launched an independent inquiry.
According to Sussex Police, they are helping the independent investigation in every way.

IOPC regional director Graham Beesley said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and everyone else affected by his death. We will be in contact with the man’s family to explain our role and will keep them regularly updated on our progress.

“We appreciate there has been concern expressed in the community about exactly what happened on Saturday evening and we are working hard to establish all of the facts.

“We are looking at the circumstances leading up to the collision and the actions of the police in the immediate aftermath.

“We have already received dashcam footage from a member of the public who was driving in the area at the time and we are analysing that along with footage from the police car involved in the collision.”The police officers who were initially involved have given their statements, and we are also compiling radio communications and body-worn footage.

“We would like to encourage anyone with knowledge to come forward and speak with us. We are aware that several people were present at the area after the crash. We would also like to speak with anyone who has any further film or a cell phone that they may have taken during the event.”

Sussex Police Chief Superintendent Jo Banks said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who tragically died in this collision.
