Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson said Jamaica Reggae Boyz striker Jonson Clarke-Harris was yet to agree personal terms with Charlton Athletic after a bid was accepted last week.
The 29-year-old is set to depart after Charlton agreed a fee of PS500,000 with their fellow League 1 participants last week.
Clarke-Harris came close to sealing a move to former club Bristol Rovers, another League 1 outfit, last year, but it appears that he is now in the final days of his current deal with Peterborough.
“A bid has been accepted by Charlton,” Ferguson told BBC Cambs Sport after their 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Leeds United on Sunday. “It’s up to the player now to agree personal terms, and I don’t think we’re at that stage yet.”
Clarke-Harris has been a big hit for Peterborough over the past three years, twice winning the Golden Boot.
He has scored 10 goals this season, including six in the League, but Ferguson has been preparing for life without the forward, who made what may be his final appearance in the 2-2 draw with Barnsley at the end of last month, scoring twice in a stunning comeback.
“We have a valuation on each player,” Ferguson said. “If a club meets that, we’ll let that player go and speak with them – try and arrange personal terms. That is the simple equation.
“We’ve always maintained it has to be the figure the chairman sets, which is predominantly quite a high one – but for the right reason because we have real quality.”
The interest from Charlton has been well known as they look to make a late surge for the play-offs, although they are currently 13 points adrift from the all-important sixth spot.
A 3-3 draw with Port Vale on Saturday extended the winless run of the Addicks, as they are known, to nine in all competitions, and manager Michael Appleton is hoping for a big transfer window.
An attacking duo of Clarke-Harris and Alfie May, the current joint leading scorer in the League, will be an embarrassment of riches for Charlton and the envy of any club in the third tier of English football.
Interestingly, Charlton host Peterborough this weekend, and they will be hoping the deal for Clarke-Harris can be finalised in time for what may be his debut for them.
