Wayne Rooney has risked the wrath of Plymouth Argyle fans already by mocking the Devon accent.
The Manchester United and England legend was named Plymouth’s new manager on Saturday, four months after being sacked by Birmingham City following a disastrous three-month spell at the Midlands club.
But he may have some work to do to get the locals on side when he moves to the county in the South-West of England after slamming the Devon accent
While playing a game of EA Sports FC Pro Clubs with YouTubers Angry Ginge and Pieface, Rooney couldn’t resist taking a dig at the latter, who happens to be a Plymouth fan.
‘I know people say about Scousers with their accent, but that guy’s accent is the worst I’ve ever heard in my life,’ Rooney said.
‘What’s wrong with my accent?’ Pieface replied.
‘The Devon lad. That’s horrendous!’ Rooney claimed.
The brutal exchange left Angry Ginge in hysterics, before Pieface took to X to warn Rooney: ‘I hope he knows most people here sound like me,’ alongside a laughing face emoji.
Rooney has wasted no time in getting ready for his move to Devon, having started looking at properties around the resort of Salcombe – Britain’s costliest coastal hot-spot – with his wife Coleen.
According to property site RightMove, properties in Salcombe had an overall average price of £1,072,781 over the last year.
the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £1,343,217.
Though the prices, for many, will be looked at as extortionate figures, it’s nothing compared to the £20million mansion in Cheshire that they have lived in for just over a year.
Finding a suitable home for his family is unlikely to be an issue for Rooney, but he will want to make sure he also has the fans giving him their full backing once he arrives in Devon as he looks to prove he can succeed on the touchline.
After underwhelming spells at Derby County and DC United, Rooney had a torrid time at Birmingham, but has been given another chance in the Championship.
Plymouth only stayed up by a single point in 2023-24 and sacked both Steven Schumacher and Ian Foster during the campaign, suggesting Rooney will need to start well to avoid a similar fate.
