Plymouth Argyle are on the hunt for a new boss this summer after ending the season under the temporary lead of director of football Neil Dewsnip.
After Ian Foster’s exit, Dewsnip took the reins for the second time in the campaign and managed to lead the Pilgrims to safety. It was a close call in their first season back in the Championship, but they ultimately achieved their goal of avoiding an immediate League One return.
In light of Foster’s difficulties, Argyle is approaching their upcoming appointment with patience, but it appears that things will pick up during the course of the following week.
Composing for X, A number of individuals are still being considered, according to John Percy, a correspondent for The Telegraph, but an appointment is getting closer.
Plymouth Argyle will speak with former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom this week as they further up their investigation. He appears to be one of the few applicants being considered for the position of targeted boss with EFL expertise.
An eye-catching appointment
It is important to note that Plymouth Argyle appears to be considering a number of managers for their managing position.
But Heckingbottom would undoubtedly be a striking addition to the south coast side.
Only this season he was managing in the Premier League with Sheffield United. Yes, the Blades had struggled in the top-flight under his lead, but many felt the sales of key players had the Bramall Lane outfit doomed from the get-go, with little blame lying at the door of Heckingbottom.
Ultimately, his work with Sheffield United was impressive, leading them to promotion in his last Championship season.
Bringing someone with that recent record to Home Park would be a statement from Plymouth Argyle and it would surely be a move popular among their loyal fanbase.
Changing direction?
At 46 years old, Heckingbottom is by no means an elderly manager; rather, he is by far the most experienced when compared to the club’s recent managers.
Prior to joining Plymouth Argyle, Ryan Lowe managed Bury for almost eighteen months, and Steven Schumacher’s first managerial stint was at Home Park. Foster has coached England youth teams and had a wealth of coaching expertise, yet from 2009 to 2011, he managed just one club—in Ireland.
Conversely, Heckingbottom has been in the dugout since 2016. Throughout that time, he has led Sheffield United, Barnsley, Leeds United, and Hibernian.
Although the Barnsley-born CEO would represent an impressive appointment, there is still time to investigate other alternatives.
