Tragically in Amsterdam as Footballer dies ‘heartbeat’

Pontlliw FC player Charlie Batcup, 30, from Swansea has died.

The “heartbeat” of his club’s community, a Welsh football player, passed away in Amsterdam. After learning of the death of its “player, club man, and dear friend,” Charlie Batcup, 30, Swansea FC declared itself “heartbroken and devastated.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) said it was in communication with the local authorities and providing help to the family of a British citizen who had passed away in the Netherlands. Joe Rodon, a football player for Wales, was spotted on Saturday at the Euro 2024 qualifier in Armenia with a jersey honouring Charlie underneath his uniform.

Charlie was a Pontlliw player for his whole life, and the football team honoured him on Sunday by saying he will “always be in our thoughts now and forever”. “Pontlliw FC is heartbroken and devastated to announce the tragic passing of our player, club man, and dear friend Charlie Batcup,” read the team’s complete statement.
