Portsmouth boss approaching target for former Ipswich Town, Wolves and Sheffield United man’

John Mousinho has set his sights on having Lee Evans join Pompey’s promotion push for their trip to Peterborough next week.

Additionally, the Blues manager has laid out the training schedule that should lead to the new player being approved to strengthen a depleted midfield.

Evans agreed a deal until the end of the season last week, after leaving Ipswich at the start of February.

After missing time due to knee surgery in October of last year, the 29-year-old has returned to full training at Pompey’s Hilsea base.

The former Sheffield United and Wolves player is expected to pick up speed over the next few days, leading to a much-needed boost – perhaps at London Road next Saturday.

Lee trained with us last Friday and Saturday, followed by a full session on Monday and a modified session on Tuesday, according to Mousinho. Then on Wednesday, Friday, and the following weekend, there was a full session.

“We can give him another really good three training sessions over Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week, but the Burton game will be a little too soon for him.”

Because you get all the short and sharp stuff when you come back from rehab, it may expose him to the bigger offerings.

“We need to expose him to longer distances and bring him as close to match pace as possible. We’ve done a lot of short, sharp stuff.”

“Hopefully, it will be for the Peterborough match; if not, there’s that Barnsley match.”

Pompey can only hope that having a player with Evans’ experience and skill supporting their promotion push would come at the perfect time to boost their chances of winning the Championship.

Mousinho went on, “I’m sure nothing will faze a player like Lee who’s had such a solid and successful career because he’s used to all sorts of conditions.”

“But having that experienced head and someone who knows exactly what he’s doing is the biggest positive for us as we go into that latter stage.”

He’s adapted to life quite rapidly and effectively. We don’t want people to enter the game thinking about anything but having an impact. That is what we want.
