John Mousinho disclosed that, following Tom Lowery’s most recent injury, Pompey has been searching the free agent market.
However, the Blues manager believes that the players needed to support his team’s midfield promotion campaign aren’t now available.
With six members of the first team squad out for the season and ten long-term ailments, Mousinho is currently dealing with unprecedented injury issues.
With Terry Devlin, Joe Morrell, and Alex Robertson out for the season, the midfield has taken the biggest impact. Tom Lowery picked up a hamstring injury against Cambridge last week, meaning Ben Stevenson (knee) and Tino Anjorin (hamstring) are out.
With Owen Moxon and Marlon Pack the only other healthy deep-lying centre midfielders at the team.
Although Mousinho had said earlier in the month that Pompey was not interested in signing any players who were not under contract, Lowery’s injury caused him to change his mind.
But after weighing the choices, it was determined that nobody could enter PO4 and leave their mark.
“There’s nothing out there,” declared Mousinho.
We looked at the free agent market because Tom was hurt, but there isn’t anything right now that we think could improve the team.
“We’re really happy with where the squad is right now, but that doesn’t mean we rule anything out because things could change drastically or there might be something we’re missing.”
Mousinho did note that there are chances to bring in players outside of the transfer windows that can have an impact, despite Pompey’s stance on free agents.
He highlighted Cambridge United’s Lyle Taylor and 13-goal Bristol Rovers front man Chris Martin as two standout examples
