Preston North End have completed their first two pieces of business this summer and it’s now on to the next priorities.
The Lilywhites brought Sam Greenwood in on loan from Leeds United last Friday, before the arrival of Stefan Teitur Thordarson was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. There is an option-to-buy Greenwood next summer, inserted in the deal, while Thordarson has put pen-to-paper on a three-year contract – with the option of a further.
Both players are versatile and attack minded. Greenwood has named his best position as a number ten, while able to play wide and in the middle of the park. Thordarson, a big, powerful midfield player, predominantly operates as a number eight. The Iceland international scored 11 goals last season, in Denmark.
Although North End misses the mark, the job is far from finished. It’s known that Preston is currently concentrating on signing a central defender and a few wing-backs. Should no one depart, director Peter Ridsdale told the Lancashire Post last month that four to five signings were anticipated. Right now, five seems far more likely than four.
Liam Millar, a loan player who filled in as a left wing-back in numerous games last season, is no longer in the team. Preston already lacked a right wing-back since Calvin Ramsay, a January hire, has only played two games for the team. Naturally, Alan Browne, who might step in when needed, has gone on.
As things stand, Robbie Brady, Kian Best, Andrew Hughes, and Brad Potts are the alternatives on the right, while Josh Seary and Brad Potts are the options on the left. The latter two are unquestionably the better choice for left center backs. It is necessary to add players to the core of defense because Patrick Bauer is considered surplus to requirements and Greg Cunningham was released this summer.
