Premier League set date for meeting on £900m EFL deal which impacts Preston’

Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters – alongside EFL chair Rick Parry – was quizzed by the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) committee in mid-January

In a meeting later this month, Premier League clubs will attempt to reach a “new deal” with the English Football League.

After failing to come up with a new finance package in recent months, the elite clubs will get together on February 29 to discuss the matter. Richard Masters, the chief executive of the Premier League, stated last month that a standstill resulted from “very few” but “very important” concerns; since the summer, ideas have been rearranged.

A deal that will see EFL clubs get 14.75% of a pool of money from both domestic and foreign media in 2023. The money would be distributed over a six-year period to Football League clubs, giving the EFL an extra £900 million in cash. One point of contention has been the Championship’s financial rules, and a second meeting is scheduled for March 11.

According to BBC Sport, ‘sources at a Premier League shareholders’ meeting in London earlier this month expressed increased confidence over a positive outcome’. The Football Governance Bill is due to go through Parliament in the next few weeks. And if the Premier League and EFL are unable to thrash out a deal, a new independent football regulator could impose one.
