Preston North End star is now seen as a nemesis”

Emil Riis was once being linked with a move to Middlesbrough – now the Preston North End man cannot stop scoring against the Riverside club.

In the game on Wednesday night at Deepdale, the Dane scored the game-winning goal, giving Ryan Lowe’s team their third straight triumph. In the second half, Riis was present to score his second goal of the year. After missing nearly a year due to a major knee injury, North End’s number 19 made a comeback to the pitch in late December.

Now that he is back in the lineup and back on the score sheet, Riis should be feeling confident going into the Boro match. In fact, the 25-year-old has scored more goals against Middlesbrough than he has against any other team in his career with his current total of six goals. After Finn Azaz equalised three minutes earlier, Riis clinched PNE’s victory during the workweek.

The Dane’s season ended in January of the 2022–2023 campaign, but not before he scored in a 2-1 victory over Boro in October. On the last day of the season, Riis scored twice at Deepdale in Ryan Lowe’s debut season as manager. The PNE victory put an end to Chris Wilder’s team’s hopes of qualifying for the postseason with a 4-1 victory.

Earlier in the season, under Frankie McAvoy, Riis scored in a 2-1 victory at the Riverside. In the eighteenth minute, after Ched Evans had headed in the equaliser, he capitalised on a mistake made by Sol Bamba. Additionally, Riis scored in a 3-0 home victory during his debut campaign with Preston—a game that was played behind closed doors.

The summer after that previously mentioned 4-1 triumph, the Danish daily BT revealed that Riis was the target of a £7.5 million offer, coming from an unidentified Championship team. At the time, that was assumed to be Boro, but Preston stopped Wilder’s side’s approach. After paying seven figures to recruit Marcus Forss and Matthew Hoppe, they signed Cameron Archer on loan from Aston Villa in January.
