Former Motherwell striker Kevin van Veen is throwing the door open to a return to the Scottish Premiership with Rangers showing an ‘interest’ before his £500,000 summer move to Groningnen.
The journeyman veteran may have doubts about whether he really fits into the Rangers model, but the interest shown in him from Ibrox the summer – coupled with the uncertainty now hanging over the striker’s head – makes this a deal to look out for ahead of the January window.
As Football Insider reported recently, Rangers are keen to add more attacking depth to Philippe Clement’s squad, though their ability to do just that may be restricted after a summer of heavy spending. A player like Kevin van Veen, then, may tick more boxes than the player himself realises.
Hitting the net 40 times in 83 Motherwell appearances, Van Veen is a proven source of goals in Scottish football. And, at 32, he is unlikely to require a bank breaking fee either. Particularly after losing his place on the Groningen bench.

“The move back home has not worked out the way I had anticipated,” Van Veen tells the Scottish Sun, admitting that he would consider a return to Britain due to personal reasons. “It has been much harder than I thought it would be.
“Of course, I would listen to Motherwell because I had a successful time there. But, last season, my agent told me there was definitely interest in me from Rangers. Though at my age, I maybe don’t fit their profile
“I had a lot of happy times in Scotland, and I’d never rule out more.”
Groningen paid £500,000 to sign the one-time Scunthorpe United and Northampton Town ace over the summer. Despite scoring five times in 13 appearances in the Dutch second tier, Van Veen has been dropped from the XI after what the Scottish Sun call a ‘fall out’ with manager Dirk Lukkien.
Prolific at Motherwell
“The coach and I had a discussion,” Van Veen explains. “And I crossed a line in the language I used with him. Since then, I’ve been on the bench and that’s caused a bit of interest.
“My agent’s had calls from six or seven clubs asking about the possibility of a loan in January. That would be the sensible alternative if things stay the same.”
Rangers have been in superb form since Clement replaced Mick Beale in the dugout, though doubts persist over their centre-forward options. Danilo and Kemar Roofe have suffered their fair share of fitness issues, while Cyriel Dessers remains frantic and frustrating.
