Chansiri chats, Musaba relief and transfer planning – Sheffield Wednesday press notes

The highlights of Danny Röhl’s pregame press conference are highlighted here as they prepare to travel to Bristol City on Saturday in an attempt to win two straight games.

This weekend, Sheffield Wednesday will visit Bristol City in an attempt to win two straight games. Manager Danny Röhl gave a preview of the game to the local media prior to it. These are the main ideas that came out of the press conference.

Off-field matters

This week at Hillsborough, things off the field have taken up most of the agenda. The EFL announced last Friday that the club was subject to a registration embargo. It was formally lifted today. However, a lot has happened in the interim. Owner Dejphon Chansiri made some startling remarks, there have been concerns about unpaid wages (which, happily, did not come to pass), and there has been dissatisfaction among the fan base regarding the entire affair.

Röhl was naturally asked what he thought about it all, but he quickly rejected the idea that anything in it serves as a justification for the group or as an unwelcome diversion. The German said, “Everyone is on the same page.” “I believe that everything has been resolved, which is positive. As we can go forward to the next game.”

He was also asked if he’d had a meeting with Chansiri, as was referenced post-Rotherham. On this matter he said: “I have good communication with the chairman. We’re looking short-term and long-term.”

Asking if he had been informed of any financial issues before accepting the position, he responded, “I wasn’t scared about the financial problems because my focus is just about how I can improve the team.”

Musaba update

Anthony Musaba caught the eye in Wednesday's win over Rotherham before going off with a knock

Anthony Musaba, the winger, was perhaps the most impressive player in that victory over Rotherham. He moved with incredible speed and contributed significantly to both of Michael Smith’s goals. When the Dutchman left the game early on Sunday after taking a blow, there were worries. Fortunately, Röhl provided a good status report prior to the journey to Bristol.

“He is back in the gym. I was afraid he might get hurt, so I decided to take him off,” he said. “It was a good choice and now he’s back in training and ready to go again which is good news for me!”

Steady head

After just a few interactions with the media, it’s clear that Röhl is a cunning operator. And regardless of how the victory over the Millers transpired, he’s not the type of person who easily gets carried away.

“We must aspire to and grow beyond more. It’s not about taking a seat back and toasting. Since the first victory is all we have to celebrate thus far. I always hope for more victories than just this one.”

Wednesdayites are going to adore that quote’s sentiment. Röhl demands continuous improvement and is not satisfied to stand still.

Word on the fringe men

As of right now, S6’s injury woes are subsiding; only Momo Diaby and Juan Delgado are not available for selection. Regarding the latter, good news was given here as the Frenchman returned to the Middlewood grass after an extended absence due to a foot injury.

With 27 bodies available for the journey to Ashton Gate, it means Röhl has a sizable squad to pick from once more. That has the drawback that some will unavoidably fail. Just two players under the German have not yet been included in a matchday squad: Tyreeq Bakinson and Ashley Fletcher. He did give them and other similar-minded people some encouragement, saying, “It’s about showing a reaction when you’re not in the squad.”

The Owls’ manager also mentioned young goalie Pierce Charles, praising the 18-year-old and expressing satisfaction with senior duo Cameron Dawson and Devis Vasquez, adding, “maybe there is a chance” for him later on.

The Owls’ boss also spoke of his coaching staff saying the hope is that more additions will be forthcoming in the next week or so. He aims to bring in a set-piece specialist and a goalkeeping coach. As for Neil Thompson, the under-21s boss who has been lending a hand with the first team, he is expected to continue his hybrid role in the meantime after praise from Röhl.

The issue of January also got brought up, with the manager suggesting he is already looking at compiling his shortlist ahead of the transfer window re-opening for business.

Röhl told Yorkshire Live : “Now we will start preparing for January. I will then decide what we can or cannot do. We need a strong group for the second half (of the season) and so we’ll see what we can do in January.”
